On 24 June 2025, ALICE hosted the third session of its Thematic Group 3 (TG3) webinar series, focused on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twins (DT) can support decision-making across all planning layers in logistics – from strategic to real-time execution.
The session, titled Operational Excellence in Logistics: Supporting Decisions through AI and Digital Twins, gathered over 60 participants from research institutes, logistics providers, digital solution companies, and EU-funded projects. Led by Claudio Caremi, Partner and leader of the logistics division at Optit, the webinar provided practical insights into how AI and DT applications are reshaping logistics operations in waste management, energy distribution, FMCG, and automotive sectors.
AI and DT technologies were showcased as key enablers of smarter, more agile logistics systems – helping organizations simulate operational scenarios, evaluate trade-offs, and optimize performance under uncertainty. The webinar demonstrated that these tools support individuals in making better decisions throughout the entire process, rather than simply automating tasks.
During the keynote, Claudio Caremi presented four real-world use cases:
- Waste logistics: Optimizing waste flows and treatment plant loads through a digital twin of the national network, allowing planners to simulate environmental and economic outcomes.
- Gas distribution: Using AI models to dynamically redesign depot networks and align with seasonal demand and business growth.
- FMCG logistics: Improving pallet and container packing accuracy through custom algorithms that reduce under- and overestimation.
- Automotive transport: Enhancing dispatching and routing through machine learning models that learn from operational patterns and driver preferences.
This session forms part of ALICE’s continued effort to support members in adopting digital transformation solutions that are aligned with sustainability, efficiency, and resilience goals. Future TG3 webinars will explore AI and DT applications in urban logistics, port operations, and multimodal planning environments.
