Market study on energy efficiency and GHG emissions of logistics hubs
Wednesday, October 14th, 2026
Logistics hub operators are invited to contribute data to improve GHG emission intensity values and strengthen environmental performance insights for the sector.
ALICE is supporting the dissemination of the 2026 GILA & Partners market study results on energy efficiency and GHG emissions of logistics hubs, led by Fraunhofer IML, together with GreenRouter and Politecnico di Milano.
ALICE and the study partners are also planning a dedicated webinar on 26th November 2026 at 16:30 CEST to present the results of the 2026 study and stimulate discussion with logistics hub operators and other stakeholders. Further details and registration information will be shared in due course.
The annual study invites operators of logistics hubs worldwide, including logistics real estate sites, ports, terminals and intermodal facilities, to share primary data on annual resource consumption and throughput. The objective is to improve the availability and granularity of environmental performance indicators for logistics hubs and support more robust GHG emission intensity values for the sector.
The initiative builds an anonymised database that already includes more than 1,000 hubs of approximately 200 companies and 63 countries, mainly across Europe and the USA. The 2026 edition aimed to further raise the granularity of KPIs, with a special focus on intermodal terminals and on increasing participation from hubs outside Europe.
Fraunhofer IML, GreenRouter and Politecnico di Milano analysed the anonymised data to generate insights into environmental performance, including energy use, GHG emissions per throughput or square metre, GHG sources and decarbonisation measures. The anonymised findings are expected to support updates of sector tools and frameworks such as the GLEC Framework, EcoTransIT World and other resources used by logistics stakeholders.
Already now, the 2027 edition of the study is under preparation: For participation, use Fraunhofer IML’s REff Tool® , which is certified by Smart Freight Centre as meeting the requirements of ISO 14083:2023. Participants receive their individual results directly online after entering their data, while aggregated results are used only in anonymised form.
This annual study provides a practical opportunity to contribute to a stronger evidence base for reducing emissions from logistics hubs. Reliable, comparable and granular data is essential to support decision-making, identify improvement measures and accelerate progress towards net zero logistics.
