ISL joins ALICE to strengthen maritime expertise in logistics innovation

Monday, September 15th, 2025

ALICE is pleased to welcome the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) as a new member of our European innovation platform. Founded in 1954 as a non-profit foundation in Bremen, Germany, ISL brings decades of experience in maritime logistics research, consulting, and know-how transfer. With offices in Bremen and Bremerhaven- Germany’s second largest port- the institute combines academic rigour with practical solutions to support innovation across the global supply chain.

Recognised as one of Europe’s leading institutions in maritime logistics, ISL contributes deep sectoral expertise through its seven interdisciplinary competence areas: Maritime Markets, Maritime Security, Maritime Environment, Maritime Transport Chains, Simulation, Software Solutions, and Digital Innovations. These capabilities enable ISL to support the development of application-oriented solutions for both public and private stakeholders worldwide.

As part of its mission, ISL delivers tailored research, consulting, and digital solutions, complemented by advanced data services and statistical publications. The institute plays an active role in European R&I initiatives, with involvement in projects such as SEAMLESS, ReNEW, OCEANDIS, ResC4EU, and OVERHEAT. These projects focus on critical areas including port digitalisation, decarbonisation, hydrogen integration, and the development of future-ready, low-emission maritime logistics systems.

ISL’s membership in ALICE reinforces its commitment to driving the digitalisation, decarbonisation, and resilience of freight and logistics. The institute brings a unique maritime perspective to ALICE’s thematic work, particularly within areas such as interconnected logistics systems, green corridors, and port-hinterland integration.

With strong connections to industry, academia, and public bodies, ISL ensures a continuous dialogue between research and practice at both the European and global levels. Its participation in ALICE working groups will support knowledge exchange, joint project development, and alignment with EU transport and climate objectives.

We warmly welcome ISL to the ALICE community and look forward to collaborating on research-driven, scalable innovations that strengthen Europe’s logistics ecosystem from port to hinterland.
