Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking

Friday, September 15th, 2023

Why this webinar

Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (EU-Rail), established by the Council Regulation (EU) 2021/2085 of 19 November 2021, is the new European partnership on rail research and innovation established under the Horizon Europe programme (2020-2027) and the universal successor of the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking.

The vision of EU-Rail is to deliver, via an integrated system approach, a high capacity, flexible, multi-modal and reliable integrated European railway network by eliminating barriers to interoperability and providing solutions for full integration for European citizens and cargo. To support the future increased usage of rail, the sector must deliver services at reduced cost compared to today, by tackling all the elements of the rail lifecycle, and improve its interaction with other transport modes. In this webinar, EU-Rail will present its Programme focus areas and address how to be more competitive.

The impact of EU-Rail

EU-Rail will provide technological and operational solutions to lead the transformation of the rail sector, working towards the twin green and digital transition of Europe.

The Union policy goals set by the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy articulating the pathways towards digitalising and greening the transport set specific milestones for the railway sector and are a major reason for the sector to undergo a significant transformation by increasing its capacity for passenger and goods transport, enabling an increase in the use of rail transport, and reducing further the greenhouse gas emissions.

The objectives of EU-Rail have been set to address the EU policy objectives, rail sector vision, and the challenges inherent to the transformation of the rail system. Specifically, this will result in:

  • Meeting evolving customer requirements
  • Improved performance and capacity
  • Reduced costs
  • More sustainable transport
  • Harmonised approach to evolution and greater adaptability
  • Reinforced role for rail in European transport and mobility
  • Improved EU rail supply industry competitiveness

The European rail supply industry is world leading and is facing many challenges at global level. Innovative solutions, conceived, designed, and developed jointly creating new products to be deployed at European level will strengthen the competitiveness of the European rail supply industry.
