eFTI4LIVE project at ALICE Innovation Theatre

Project Information

eFTI4LIVE – Certify. Connect. Trust. represents the next step in the digital transformation of freight transport in Europe.

The project supports the large-scale implementation of the electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI) Regulation (EU) 2020/1056, which establishes a legal framework for the electronic exchange of freight transport information between economic operators and competent authorities. The regulation enables logistics and transport operators to provide regulatory information digitally instead of using paper documentation.

eFTI4LIVE builds on the results of the earlier eFTI4EU and eFTI4ALL projects, moving from pilot implementation towards operational deployment and certification of digital freight information systems across Europe. The project is funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme under Grant Agreement 101233034.

By connecting ICT systems across countries and enabling certified eFTI platforms, the project aims to support a trusted and interoperable digital ecosystem for freight transport data exchange across the European Union.

Key facts

  • 55 partners
  • 19 involved Member States
  • 48 months duration
  • 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2029
  • €47.8 million budget

The consortium includes organisations from 19 EU Member States and one associated non-EU country (Norway), representing transport authorities, logistics stakeholders, technology providers and research organisations working together to deploy the eFTI ecosystem across Europe.

Objectives

The project focuses on three key priorities to support the digitalisation of freight transport.

eFTI implementation

eFTI4LIVE promotes the seamless electronic exchange of freight transport information across Europe. The project supports the practical deployment of the eFTI framework, ensuring that transport operators and authorities can exchange regulatory data digitally in line with EU legislation.

Certified eFTI platforms

The project develops and prepares the certification of secure and interoperable eFTI platforms and gateways. These platforms enable reliable and trusted data exchange between logistics operators and authorities while ensuring compliance with EU technical standards.

Efficient freight transport

Through digital information exchange, the project contributes to reducing administrative burdens, improving transparency and strengthening collaboration across supply chains. This supports more efficient and sustainable freight transport operations across Europe.

What eFTI4LIVE delivers

eFTI4LIVE focuses on moving from pilot projects towards full operational deployment of the eFTI ecosystem. Key activities include:

  • developing and testing eFTI platforms and gates
  • conducting end-to-end pilots and interoperability testing
  • integrating eFTI systems with existing ICT infrastructure
  • supporting the pre-certification and accreditation of eFTI platforms
  • preparing real-world implementation and deployment strategies
  • establishing governance processes for the future eFTI ecosystem

These activities will ensure that the infrastructure required for electronic freight transport information exchange is ready for large-scale use across Europe.

Benefits for transport operators

The adoption of eFTI solutions provides several advantages for logistics companies and transport operators:

  • reduced paperwork and administrative costs
  • faster inspections and fewer delays during checks
  • simplified regulatory compliance across EU countries
  • lower environmental impact through reduced paper use
  • new business opportunities enabled by digital logistics services

Benefits for competent authorities

eFTI also supports authorities responsible for monitoring freight transport by enabling:

  • faster and more targeted control procedures
  • better enforcement of national and EU regulations
  • improved cross-border cooperation between authorities
  • reduced bureaucracy and more efficient inspections
  • improved visibility of freight movements across Europe

Looking ahead

The eFTI Regulation will become fully applicable on 9 July 2027, when Member State authorities will be required to accept electronic freight transport information submitted through certified eFTI platforms.

By supporting certification, interoperability and large-scale deployment, eFTI4LIVE plays a key role in preparing Europe’s freight transport sector for this transition.
