ALICE is pleased to welcome Alligator AG, a Swiss startup pioneering scalable energy solutions for electric freight transport, to the ALICE community. Founded in 2021 and based in Rotkreuz, Alligator AG is working to unlock the untapped energy potential of trailers by integrating them directly into the high-voltage energy network of electric tractor units.
Heavy-duty vehicles account for 30% of CO₂ emissions from road traffic, with the majority coming from semi-trailer trucks. While electric tractors are gaining traction, trailers remain disconnected from the energy system- despite offering significant opportunities for solar generation, regenerative braking, and onboard battery storage. Alligator AG’s mission is to close this gap.
At the heart of its solution is the Planar Feedthrough, a patented, high-voltage connection technology that enables safe and automatic power transfer between tractor and trailer- even while driving. The system is fully compatible with standard fifth-wheel and kingpin configurations and does not compromise cargo volume. With this innovation, Alligator AG establishes the foundation for Energylogistics: the seamless integration of energy supply and logistics operations across the full vehicle.
Alligator AG’s current prototype connects 2 x 70 mm² shielded 800 VDC lines and is undergoing validation through the Powerbank Trailer pilot project, which demonstrates trailer-mounted batteries charged with low-cost solar energy and capable of powering the tractor unit on the road. This approach drastically reduces reliance on public fast charging and offers greater flexibility, efficiency, and grid resilience.
By joining ALICE, Alligator AG aims to collaborate with industry leaders, logistics operators, and researchers to scale the adoption of fully integrated EV tractor-trailer units. Their technology supports the goals of ALICE’s Zero-Emission Logistics and Green Corridors roadmaps and contributes to the broader electrification of freight transport.
We look forward to Alligator AG’s contribution to the ALICE network as we work together to accelerate sustainable innovation in freight and energy systems.
