Project overview
DriVe2X accelerates the transition to electromobility by advancing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies and smart charging solutions across Europe. The project focuses on unlocking the full potential of electric vehicles as flexible energy assets, supporting both the decarbonisation of transport and the stability of energy systems.
Through innovative bi-directional charging, predictive algorithms and real-world demonstrations, DriVe2X contributes to building a more efficient, resilient and user-centric energy ecosystem.
Objectives
DriVe2X aims to enable large-scale deployment of V2X technologies through:
- Innovative smart charging solutions
Developing affordable, user-friendly bidirectional charging technologies suitable for mass EV adoption - AI-driven optimisation
Designing predictive models and smart charging algorithms to maximise grid efficiency and energy use - User-centric energy systems
Ensuring high user acceptance by addressing behavioural aspects and improving user experience - V2X marketplace development
Creating local energy marketplaces that leverage EV flexibility in homes, buildings and public infrastructure - Knowledge and awareness
Promoting understanding of V2X technologies among citizens, businesses and policymakers
Demonstrations
DriVe2X validates its solutions through several demonstrators across five European countries, covering diverse use cases and environments:
- United Kingdom – Isle of Wight (V2B)
- Portugal – Porto Airport & Maia (V2B & V2G)
- Italy – Terni (V2G & microgrid)
- Netherlands – Amsterdam (V2B)
- Hungary – Budapest (V2H)
These pilots test real-life scenarios including:
- Public charging stations
- Residential charging (V2H)
- Commercial buildings and parking lots (V2B)
- Grid services and flexibility (V2G)
Innovation
DriVe2X delivers a comprehensive approach to smart electrification by integrating:
- Low-cost bidirectional EV chargers
- Machine learning-based optimisation models
- Smart charging algorithms for multiple EV charging scenarios
- Energy system integration across buildings, homes and grids
- User behaviour modelling and cybersecurity considerations
The project also explores economic and operational trade-offs, aiming to reduce costs and battery degradation while maximising system benefits.
