Multitel joins ALICE to support the digital transformation of multimodal and sustainable logistics

Monday, November 10th, 2025

ALICE welcomes Multitel, a Belgian Applied Research Centre specialising in digital technologies that accelerate the Physical Internet and support more efficient, sustainable, and interoperable logistics systems.

Based in Wallonia, Multitel develops and implements innovative digital solutions in partnership with local and international industry. The centre’s areas of expertise include smart embedded systems (IoT, 4G/5G, BLE), AI and machine learning applied to unstructured data, digital twins, and cybersecure network management. These technologies enable real-time tracking, planning optimisation, and secure data exchange- key enablers of decarbonised and digitally integrated logistics chains.

Aligned with the objectives of the Physical Internet and ALICE’s vision, Multitel has contributed to several national and European projects advancing eco-friendly, synchro-modal freight flows with full end-to-end visibility. Notably, the centre coordinated the Interreg NWE ST4W project (Smart Tracking Data Network for Shipment by Inland Waterway), which tackled the barriers to shifting palletised freight from road to inland waterway transport (IWT) through a hierarchical data platform connecting fragmented tracking systems. This enabled real-time visibility and data-sharing across logistics partners, vessels, trucks, and cargo units.

In the H2020 IW-Net project, Multitel contributed to enhancing IWT efficiency by enabling reactive, data-driven decision-making and the optimal planning of multimodal freight routes. On the other hand, Multitel participated in the Interreg NWE Wistar project, which explored the integration of smart vessels, shallow waterway e-ships, and simplified transshipment points to reduce the energy footprint of supply chains.

In the urban context, Multitel has also worked on the City Line project, developing sustainable last-mile logistics strategies, including cargo-bike-based delivery for temperature-controlled goods.

Through its membership in ALICE, Multitel aims to collaborate with European partners on interoperable planning tools, smart cargo tracking, and the integration of digital infrastructure into multimodal logistics. Their expertise directly contributes to ALICE’s roadmaps on Digitalisation, Urban Freight, and Zero-Emission Logistics.

We look forward to Multitel’s contributions to the ALICE community and to jointly advancing innovative, data-driven logistics solutions across Europe.
