Using 5G technologies to innovate logistics and ports for a sustainable future. 5G-LOGINNOV & ALICE together at TRA, 14th-17th November, Lisbon

Friday, October 28th, 2022

Much has been said about the 5G phenomenon. Widely considered as a “revolution of the information age”, 5G has become pivotal in assuring the functionality and reliability of technology is multiplied through enhanced connectivity. However, how can the latter boost freight transport, mobility and logistics supporting the transition to an efficient, integrated, harmonized and sustainable system?

5G-LOGINNOV investigates those fields aiming at optimising  freight and traffic operations at ports and logistics hubs by using new innovative concepts, applications and devices supported by 5G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, next generation traffic management, Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and the 5G logistics corridor.

Over three years of activity, the project counts 15 partners from eight European countries that are creating and developing a range of port-driven technological and societal innovations, tailored to achieve several objectives, including:

  • Increased port automation and operational efficiency.
  • Data collection and analysis on floating trucks and emission.
  • Automated truck platooning and involvement of high tech SMEs.

These innovations are implemented and tested in real operating conditions in three Living Labs environments, associated with the three 5G-LOGINNOV ports, namely:

Through the creation, testing and deployment of services, 5G-LOGINNOV will ensure port areas and city-ports operations become smarter, safer, more efficient and sustainable.

5G-LOGINNOV at TRA

During the Transport Research Arena Conference, you can meet in the ALICE booth the 5G-enabled innovations developed in the three 5G-LOGINNOV Living Labs, discovering how they concretely contribute to the transition of ports and logistics hubs into sustainable nodes:

  • real-time tracking and enhanced visibility of 5G yard trucks for service optimization, job allocation and predictive maintenance services;
  • 5G enabled video analytics targeting safety/security and logistics applications orchestrated as NFV-MANO services to 5G-IoT nodes;
  • real-time monitoring of the logistics supply chain with live tracking of 5G connected (external) trucks in-bound at Piraeus port;
  • Floating Truck and Emission Data (FTED);
  • GLOSA & Automated Truck Platooning (GTP);
  • Dynamic control loop for environment sensitive traffic management actions (DCET);
  • Management and Network Orchestration platform (MANO);
  • Port Control, Logistics and Remote Automation;
  • Mission Critical Communications in Ports;

Furthermore 5G-LOGINNOV pays a specific attention to emerging 5G business opportunities and models, to open market to new actors (Start ups and SMEs). This topic will be the focus of the 5G-LOGINNOV speech at the ALICE Innovation Theatre that will be held on 14th November from 12:45 to 13:30: Michela Apruzzese (EU Project Manager at ICOOR) will deepen the business models developed in the project so far and the results of the validations processes carried out with 5G-LOGINNOV stakeholder’s community.
