OEMs, suppliers and buyers of road freight transport services play a central role in the uptake of energy solutions but also face barriers.

After our first webinar in June 2020 (link), we will go deeper on ALICE members vision, approach and learnings on different fuels and alternatives with a focus on the regional and long haul freight transport. Speakers will share their views and development pathways in the short, medium and long term answering to the questions:

What can we do now and what is in the pipeline for the short term?

Which approaches to follow for a fuel selection?

Which are the current barriers and limitations?

The webinar is planned for 90 min. After that time we will arrange a panel discussion with the speakers and we will organize and interactive session to get participants views as input for our next steps.

Different polls were launched over the session. Here the conclusions and comments:

Meeting participants were not positive about reaching the transport white paper objective in terms of usage of rail freight.

ALICE is working with Shift 2 Rail to support the next EU R&I programme on rail so user perspectives are addressed. We consider this a must to achieve and or be close to those figures. We encourage you to watch this session under Shift 2 Rail Innovation Days addressing the subject. ALICE had an important footprint in the panel composition with our members Port of Rotterdam, GEODIS and Procter & Gamble.

In ALICE, we know that even if achieving the objectives, we will rely pretty much on logistics operations efficiency to make the transition affordable and particularly on road transport transition to low/zero emissions energy to hit climate objectives. Even achieving a full shift (100% not 30% which is the objective) of freight transported beyond 300km to rail/inland would still leave close to 60% of tn.km on road (i.e. road is key).

It is important to get a clear understanding of which fuels are best suited to support decarbonization for different corridors or transport assignments (long, regional, last mile) to lever short- and medium-term emissions reductions. Additionally, there was quite strong agreement on the need to smartly combine alternative fuels (beyond electric & hydrogen) to create impact in emissions reduction for long distances beyond 350 km and full payloads (40+ tn) in the next 10 years.

Note that most GHG emissions of freight transport are coming from long haul

Still last mile decarbonization is important but more from reduction of pollution angle and protecting health in cities.

For long distances beyond 350 km and full payloads (40+ tn), participants are more favourable of the importance of Fuel Cell Hydrogen trucks than Battery Electric trucks. However, it is quite uncertain for participants that the market penetration of Fuel Cell Hydrogen trucks will be significant before 2030.

Most participants are positive on Battery Electric Trucks and Fuel Cell Hydrogen contribution to decarbonize freight transport below 250-300 km and payloads up to 18 tn by 2025. Still, 45 % of the respondents were not fully convinced.

These and other topics addressed by our ALICE members currently and are focus areas of discussion and progress within ALICE network and with our partners

This questions were addressed during the session:

Q1: Zero Emission Zones in large cities

Q2: Pan European strategy on fuels heavily needed

Q3: What company delivered your hydrogen forklifts and stations?

Q4: What was the company that has done the Hydrogen retrofitting of the vehicle?
